Letters to the Editor: Why Che still captivates us, Oct. 12

Dear Editor,
Forty years after his death, its really time for the cult of Che Guevara to end (Why Che still captivates us, Oct. 12). The man executed his opponents without trial, ran one of Cuba's most brutal post-revolutionary prisons, and openly expressed regret that he had not been able to fire Soviet nuclear warheads at U.S. cities. Does Jon Lange condone such behavior or does he just choose to ignore it?
As a liberal, its pretty embarrassing to open up a newspaper and read this stuff. Among the central values of liberal thought are tolerance and respect for human rights. Summarily killing opponents of your extremist, failed ideology is something completely different, something that is thankfully unacceptable in most political discourse.
Worshipping Che when youre 15 years old, nave, and trying to get attention is one thing. Still fawning over such a violent figure when youre in college is a sign that you have some intellectual growing up to do.
