Baseball
The Suffolk District Attorney has determined that no criminal charges will be filed against the police officers who were involved with the death of Victoria Snelgrove at the celebration of the Red Sox victory last year. After the ALCS victory over the Yankees, Red Sox fans took to the streets and rioted. It was during the celebration that Snelgrove, then a 21 year old student at Emerson, was hit by a police-fired pepper projectile and died.
Earlier this week, Andruw Jones broke the Atlanta Braves record for most home runs in a single season. Hall of Famers Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron had held the previous record at 47 home runs. Jones previous career high was 36.
Los Angeles shortstop Cesar Izturis will have Tommy John surgery today on his right elbow and will be out until next July at the earliest. He had been on the DL with an injured back, but his elbow became sore while rehabbing.
Barry Bonds finally made his season debut on Monday and went 1-4 with a double that was almost cleared the fence.
Basketball
New Jersey Nets owner Bruce Ratner has found his land to build a new arena for the Nets. Ratner bought the Nets a year ago to make a new Brooklyn arena the centerpiece of a nine-acre real estate deal involving housing and offices. The Nets arena is expected to be ready for the 2008 season.
Hockey
Pavel Datsyuk is not necessarily heading to Russia as stated last week. There is a big contract issue and he could end up in Detroit or on one of two teams in Russia.
College Football
Michigan had a tough week in football. In the midst of a 17-10 loss to underdog Notre Dame, they lost their top running back, Mike Hart, to injury. Then, when the media poll came out, Michigan fell from the #3 spot to the #14 spot. Notre Dame entered the top 10 in the poll for the first time in three years.
Tennis
Roger Federer won the U.S. open for the second straight year this past Sunday in a brilliant match against the 35-year-old Andre Agassi. Federer had to hold on as Agassi attempted to stage an upset. In the end, Federer took control of the match and won for his 6th Grand Slam Title. Federer has beat Agassi in eight straight matches and has beat Lleyton Hewitt, his semi-final opponent, in their last nine matches.
