SPORTS BLURBS

A brief tour around professional sports.

WTennis swings into actions

The womens tennis team is conquering the court with no love in mind. Love, of course, is set aside and left as the opponents problem, and hopefully score. With a great commencing weekend against Simmons though, their hopes may not be too farfetched. The ladies stole the tournament with a 7-2 victory against host, Simmons College.

ES: So Jonny what do you think about Barry Bondss return to the Giants?

MSoccer primed for success

The Judges mens soccer team kicked off its home schedule on Tuesday with a dominating 4-0 win over non-conference opponent Worcester Polytechnic Institute. This was the Judges first game on the newly-renovated A-Turf surface on Gordon Field.
Brandeis scored early in the game to take the 1-0 lead. After Ben Premo 09 was brought down from behind with 5:57 into the game, Shelton Stewart 06 scored on a penalty kick to the right corner of the goal. The Judges dominated play much of the first half, shooting six more shots but went into the half with only a 1-0 lead.

No place like home field for WSoccer

On days like this past Saturday, it seems like the womens soccer team could go 18-0 this year.

Golf finishes strong at Bowdoin Invitational

The Brandeis mens golf team finished in 8th place out of 14 teams this past weekend at the Bowdoin Invitational in Brunswick, Maine, with the University of Southern Maine finishing in first place overall. Led by co-captain Josh Levine 06 and Nick Wallen 09, who shot a 77 and 79, respectively, during the tournaments final round, Brandeis shot a combined 646 during the two-day tournament.

NFL Week 1 recap: From NE to NO

Finally the four thousand plus New Orleans residents who had been living in the Houston Astrodome had something to cheer about as they watched their New Orleans Saints win their first regular season game. Days earlier, Saints players such as Joe Horn visited the Astrodome, where fans made homeless by the hurricane asked for one thing, a victory in week one. While none of the Saints promised anything, they certainly came through with an emotional last second victory with a 47-yard field goal to beat the Carolina Panthers 23-20. Unfortunately, the Saints are still without a home stadium after Hurricane Katrina damaged the Superdome, and they will be splitting their seven home games between LSUs Stadium and the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Tough loss for WVBall

This is a game the entire Judges volleyball team would love to take back. After starting the match strong with two straight wins (30-15, 30-27), they dropped the last three (22-30, 28-30, 10-15), ending with a heartbreaker in the fifth game. Oh my god, I have no idea what to say. Violette Ruggiero 09 said No questions about it, we should have won the game.

FARBER: Nerd-Jock hybrids at Gosman

The best way to describe me socially would be something of a nerd/jock hybrid. From what I can reconstruct of my parents teenage years from anecdotes, pictures, past-life experiences, and whatever stuff I make up, my dad was the nerd, and my mom was the jock. Im judging this mostly based on the respective physical appearances and social lives of my parents when they were 19. My dad, the nerd of the pair, had thick glasses, went to Columbia University, and ran away from my moms ex-boyfriend when he tried to attack him when they (my parents) were dancing.

Talib Kweli to play Brandeis

One of the most important hip-hop artists of the past decade will be paying Brandeis a visit on October 9th. While Talib Kweli may not rule the top of the Billboard music charts, like more famous MCs such as 50 Cent, it seems more fitting that an artist who illustrates his songs with socially and politically conscious lyrics and name drops luminary author Norman Mailer plays Brandeis than a rapper who fills his songs with lyrics composed of various derogative names for women and needless greed.
