Only at Brandeis…

Two years ago seems like such a blur at times. Picking the university that I would attend is all in the hazy past. One thing that I do remember, however, about that entire process was each school telling me that they in fact were unique and unlike any other. Each school I got any sort of brochure from conveyed repeatedly that they were the only school to offer this or that. In a way though, all of these brochures were the same in that they claimed diversity and a better alternative to other universities.

Nowadays, every professor demands that each paper clearly state a thesis and then defend that thesis to some conclusion. This way of thinking is outdated and ineffectual. The thesis hurts intellectual development more than it helps.

WVolleyball falls at UAA Championship

The UAA Championship was witness to an upset that came from what appeared to be from no where. Who would have thought that number one nationally ranked Washington University, winner of all but one tournament in the 19 year history of the UAA, would be sweptby number 3 nationally ranked Emory (30-25, 30-22, 30-27)? Where was Brandeis you may ask? You would have to look further down.

Wsoccer advance in first round of ECAC tournament

After barely squeaking into the ECAC tournament with a .500 record and losses in two of its final three games, it would not be out of the question to assume that the Brandeis Womens Soccer team was destined for a quick exit from the postseason. However, in one of their best efforts of the season, the Judges upset the second seeded University of Southern Maine to advance to the tournaments semi-final round. After playing through ninety scoreless minutes during regulation and another twenty minutes of overtime, goaltender Betsy Medow (08) made two huge saves in the penalty kick shootout to propel Brandeis to victory. The final score was 5-4 after seven rounds of penalties, and with the win Brandeis, the tournaments seventh seed, moves on to play third seeded Clark University, which defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 1-0 score.

Adieu Shelton Stewart

After playing for the Brandeis Judges for four years and receiving many accolades, Stewart says he still realizes what is most important. While most star soccer players would have chosen to attend a Division I school with a well-known soccer program, Stewart picked Brandeis. Even though, Stewart, who was on the 1999 World Cup Under-17 Jamaica National team, always thought of soccer as his life, he still keeps the sport in perspective.

Wsoccer marches into ECACs

As October turned into November, the leaves finally changed color, the weather went back and forth between snow and sixty degree heat, and the Brandeis Womens Soccer team approached its final regular season match looking to make up for a couple of lopsided losses suffered in the previous week. The Judges game on Saturday against New York University marked the final regular season appearance of senior co-captains Lauren Gregor and Rachel Koffman.

Fencing begins fight

With the arrival of winter the Brandeis sports scene is making the transition from outdoor to indoor, and that means that the Womens and Mens Fencing teams are kicking off their seasons. Both teams are coached by William Shipman, who is returning for his twenty-fifth year at Brandeis. He took over the position in 1981, and this year will be assisted by Dan Korschun, Elif Sachs, and Kerry Walton. On the mens side, the team is led by co-captains Brendan Doris Pierce (07) and Jeremy Simpson (06), while Deborah Model (06) is serving as captain for the women.

NFL Week 9 recap

After seven unsuccessful attempts, Peyton Manning won his first game against the New England Patriots and coach Bill Belichick in New England this Monday night. Peyton was aided in the still undefeated Colts 40-21 victory over the Patriots by wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, and All-pro running back Edgerin James who each gained more than 100 yards for the predatory Colts offense.

Msoccer finishes difficult season

In the last game of the season, the Judges tried to rally back from a 2-0 deficit, but Ben Premos goal 14 minutes into the second half, was not enough as the NYU Violets defeated the Judges 2-1. The loss put an end to a disappointing season in which Brandeis finished 6-9-2 overall with a 0-5-2 UAA record. NYU completed the regular season with an 11-6-1 record (3-4-0 UAA).

Baseball
The San Diego Padres traded pitcher Brian Lawrence to the Washington Nationals for third baseman Vinny Castilla.
Pete Rose Jr. turned himself in to authorities on charges that he was involved in distributing GBL, a steroid alternative. Rose, who faces up to 24 months in prison, admitted that he supplied teammates with the drug while playing AA ball….
