Music quick picks – the old and the new

Although its beginning to get cold, the music world is just heating up, with a bevy of new releases and upcoming concerts flooding the ears of everyone. Here is a little sample of whats new, whats coming up, and what to listen for:

Taking control of birth control

Q: I missed my pill yesterday, what should I do?

A: Though they dont protect you from STDs, birth control pills are a great method of contraception. Unfortunately, they can be a little confusing at times. The most important part of making birth control pills work for you is remembering to take them at the same time every day. Some people find it helps to do it right when they wake up, others dont like this method because they do not always wake up at the same time every day. Some choose to take it before they go to bed, or even set an alarm on their cell phone to remind them. Choose whatever system works best for you, but be prepared for the fact that youll probably fuck it up every now and then. After all, you go to Brandeis. Youre a busy person.

Hooked on dance

For an aspiring performer, Brandeis can offer many opportunities to show off talent. However, the university can also help this same person become more proficient in their artistic focus. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a Broadway star. Since a very young age, I have worked on my craft by taking voice lessons and enrolling in every acting program I could find. I did theater summer camp and became proficient at several instruments, thus expanding my musical knowledge. However, dancing was never my strong suit.

And why do you hate Brandeis?

Ever since I was a freshman last year and probably before then, it has been the in thing to despise Brandeis University. Like, I hate it here. I never quite understood this phenomenon. Why people hate Brandeis is either untrue, unimportant, or easily fixable.

How to not get fat at college

Weve all heard of the infamous freshman fifteen – those extra pounds that many will gain within their first year at college. It is easy to let our eating habits slide in this environment, where beer runs freely on the weekends and we all have the Dominos delivery number tacked securely to our bulletin boards. Unfortunately, the freshman fifteen doesnt melt away come sophomore year. Many people fail to ever lose that weight, carrying it over into their post-college lives.

MSoccer stuns MIT then falls to Case

All looked lost for the Judges on the road at MIT and down 3-0 after halftime. However, demonstrating the heart and spirit that Coach Mike Coven always mentions when talking about his players, Brandeis scored four unanswered goals and stunned the Engineers 4-3. Notching a hat trick in the effort was offensive dynamo Ben Premo 09. The rookies also played a vital role in the turnaround.

The Hoot takes a look at Jessica Johnson

Brandeis has a new softball coach, just the second in its history. Her name is Jessica Johnson and she brings a history of winning with her.

WSoccer’s undefeated streak ends

All good things must come to an end, but I can certainly bet the womens soccer team agrees that there are better ways to go than losing 3-1 to non-conference rivals Tufts on Wednesday.

Jasak, Gordon named to Team of the Week

Brandeis womens soccer was honored as two players, Melissa Gordon 07 and Sarah Jasak 08 were selected as members of D3kicks.com Team of the Week with over a month of the season covered.

Jonas takes two at ITA’s

Though most of the Brandeis Mens tennis team took the weekend off, the Judges sent two athletes to compete this Saturday. Sam Jonas 07 and Mike Vulfovich 07 represented Brandeis at this two day tournament located in Williamstown, MA. Jonas was seeded 12th going into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association competition and his teammate was ranked similarly.
